최근 영화 콘크리트 유토피아? 가 나왔다고 하는데 시간이 없어서 아직 보지는 못했으나 이병헌이 거칠게 나온 포스터 한 장으로도 저 영화는 이병헌 영화구나 싶더라. 그런데 나의 가장 인상 깊었던 그리고 잔상이 오래 남는 영화는 바로 '아스팔트 사나이'라는 드라마다. 1995년 SBS 16부작 드라마였는데 나의 기억이 맞는지는 모르겠으나 그야말로 '선풍적인' 인기를 모은 드라마라고나 할까?

 

그때는 별로 그렇게 생각 안 했는데 요새 늙어가는 이병헌 배우를 보면 아래 사진은 그야말로 애기다. 물론 정우성 저 날카로운 눈빛 보소.

출연진이 화려했다. 이병헌, 정우성, 최진실, 허준호, 이영애 등.. 뭐 내가 안 좋아하는 배우들이 없다. 이병헌 역할이 뭐였냐면 자동차 디자인하는 사람이었는데 아직도 그 자동차 샘플 목업 만든다고 진흙 같은 것으로 덧대고 만들던 이미지가 눈에 선하다. 정우성은 이병헌 동생으로 카레이서! 나중에는 무슨 UFC 격투 같은 것까지 하면서 야성미, 아니 반항기 넘쳐나는 역할이었지.

황당했던 로맨틱, 성공적만 빼면

사람이 TV에서 보는 연예인들의 진짜 삶을 어떻게 알겠나. 평소 품행이 어떤지, 여자관계가 어떤지 그런 것을 알리가 만무했던 시절. 드라마 속 연예인들은 지금보다는 훨씬 더 높은.. 그러니까 우리 같은 일반인과는 레벨이 다른 사람처럼 여겨졌음. 지금도 마찬가지기는 하나 이 유튜브라는 것이 생기면서 사실 일반인이나 연예인이나 그냥 다 같은 한국 사람 아닌가 하는 평준화 계급사회가 도래한 듯한 느낌도 살짝 들음.

아무튼 이병헌의 역사에 남을 해프닝. 그것도 유부남이면서 온 국민을 웃프게 만들었던 그 로맨틱, 성공적은 정말 어디 지울래야 지울 수 없는 역사 아닌 흑역사가 되어버림.

그럼에도 불구하고 이병헌 배우는 자기 일에 참 꾸준함. 하다가 쉬고 그런 거가 별로 없는 것 같고, 워낙 연기가 무르익다 보니 무슨 역할을 가져다줘도 몰입하게 만들어 버리는 배우라는 생각이 든다.

나는 삶에 있어 무엇에 진심이던가

사람이 비교하면서 사는 게 가장 불행한 것 같다. 특히나 상대적인 불행과 상대적인 행복에 사는 사람들은 이병헌 같은 배우가 솔직히 돈 많거나 와이프가 미인이거나 배우로써 직업적으로 성공했거나 인기가 많거나 해서 부러운 거보다 솔직히 나는 자기 일 하나에 정진하는 모습이 부럽다.

 

사실 무언가 꾸준히 한다는 것 자체가 보상 없이는 대단히 어려운 것임. 왜 많은 사람들이 유튜브 한 번씩은 다 해보지 않았던가? 누가 성공하던가. 결국 Grit (끈기) 있는 사람이 어느 정도 반열에 오르는 것이다.

 

 

꾸준히 하는 것은 완전한 습관이 되던가 안 하면 먼가 찜찜해질 때까지 루틴을 만들던가(누구 말처럼) 아니면 계속할 수밖에 없는 즉각적인 보상이 매일 주어지던가 해야 함. 우리가 그래도 직장에 나가는 것은 한 달에 한 번 월급은 나오기 때문이 아닌가.

 

그러나 그 수준을 뛰어넘는 무언가가 있기에 이병헌 배우는 매력이 있다. 인생에 있어서 그것도 유한하고, 짧고, 젊은 시절은 더더욱 짧아서 열정과 에너지에 한계가 있는 한 인간으로서 나는 지금 무엇에 진심이던가?

이병헌 배우처럼 꾸준함으로 삶이 꽉 차 보이는 것. 그것 자체가 행복인 삶.

Ｔhought 1: Asphalt Man "Lee Byung-hun"

I've heard about the recent movie "Concrete Utopia", but I haven't had the time to watch it yet. However, just from a rugged poster featuring Lee Byung-hun, I could tell it's his movie. But the most memorable and lingering drama for me is "Asphalt Man". It was a 16-episode drama on SBS in 1995. If my memory serves me right, it was a drama that garnered a "sensational" popularity.

Back then, I didn't think much of it, but seeing the aging actor Lee Byung-hun nowadays, he looks so young in those old photos. And of course, there's Jung Woo-sung with his sharp gaze.

The cast was stellar. Lee Byung-hun, Jung Woo-sung, Choi Jin-sil, Heo Jun-ho, Lee Young-ae... I like all of them. Lee Byung-hun played a car designer, and I still vividly remember him molding a car model with clay-like material. Jung Woo-sung played Lee Byung-hun's younger brother, a car racer, and later even ventured into something like UFC, portraying a wild and rebellious character.

Thought 2: A Bizarre Romance, Except for the Success

How can one know the real lives of celebrities they see on TV? Especially during a time when we had no idea about their personal lives, relationships, or behaviors. Celebrities in dramas seemed to be on a different level than ordinary people. Although it still feels the same now, with the advent of YouTube, it seems like there's a leveling out, making celebrities and ordinary people just... Koreans.

Regardless, Lee Byung-hun had a memorable incident, a romantic scandal while being a married man, which became an indelible mark in his history.

Yet, Lee Byung-hun remains consistent in his work. He doesn't take long breaks, and his seasoned acting ensures that he immerses the audience in any role he takes on.

Thought 3: Experiencing Continuous Happiness

Comparing oneself to others is the root of unhappiness. Especially those who live in relative unhappiness and relative happiness. To me, actors like Lee Byung-hun, regardless of their wealth, beauty of their spouse, career success, or popularity, are enviable for their dedication to their craft.

Being consistent in something is incredibly difficult without rewards. Why do so many people try YouTube at least once? Who succeeds? In the end, it's those with grit who rise to a certain level.

Being consistent requires either forming a complete habit, creating a routine until it feels uncomfortable not to follow it, or receiving daily immediate rewards. The reason we go to work is because we receive a monthly salary, right?

But there's something beyond that level that makes Lee Byung-hun so captivating. Life is finite, short, and our youthful days are even shorter. As a human with limited passion and energy, what am I truly passionate about in my life?

Seeing a life filled with consistency, like Lee Byung-hun, is in itself a fulfilling life.

I see that.
